Estonian Air Force retires the Robinson R44
In July 2020, during its 101st anniversary, the Estonian Air Force announced that it will retire its four Robinson R44 helicopters. The helicopters were donated to Estonia in 2002 by the US government: two Clipper I variants (one with pop-out floats and one with fixed floats, serials 63 and 64) and two Raven I law enforcement variants with FLIR and loudspeakers (serials 65 and 66).
In 2012 two Robinson R44s were upgraded for night vision training by Rebtech and Night Flight Concepts. On 22 June 2020, a special formation flight around Estonia was organised with all four Robinsons to celebrate Victory Day. The round trip including fuel stops lasted about 7,5 hours.
The first R44 Clipper I, serial 64, has been retired and was donated to the Estonian Aviation Museum in Tartu where it arrived on 23 July 2020. The other three helicopters are planned to be retired at the rate of one per year. Following this schedule that will leave the air force without any helicopters by 2023. The R44s are operated by the 2.Eskadrill / Lennugrupp (Composite Flight Wing) at Ämari, 40 km southwest of Talinn.
