Today we announce that the government will increase the Swedish military budget next year by 13 billion SEK (+10%), bringing the total amount to 138 billion SEK. Sweden’s military budget will therefore reach 2,4% of GDP in 2025.

In 2024 the military budget grew by 28%, and in 2025 it will grow an additional 10%. The security situation demands further increases and Sweden will answer to that task. It’s important that European allies inside NATO assume a larger responsibility for Europe’s security.

Sweden will reach its requirement targets for officers (10k) and full-time/part-time active personnel (10k) in 2025 and is on course to conscript 8000 recruits next year.

We will also continue our work with accelerating defence innovation by adding funds and creating new structures for bringing innovation into the armed forces. Swedish civilian-military cooperation must better be translated into military capabilities.

The government is also adding funds to the Swedish Defence Research Agency to better research disruptive technologies and screen foreign direct investments into national strategic interests. Examples of such interests are critical raw materials and defence innovation.

Sweden has in 2024 enforced numerous agreements with allies that will make the Nordic region safer. Examples are the State Partnership Program (SPP) and the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the USA. We will continue to build up our collective defence in 2025.

Next month the government will present the Swedish total defence bill for 2025-2030, which is based on the final report by the Swedish Defence Commission. NATO’s capability targets will be of central importance for the first time in Sweden.

WASHINGTON, September 20, 2024

The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Sweden of Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio Systems and related equipment for an estimated cost of $31.5 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today.

The Government of Sweden has requested to buy one hundred twenty (120) AN/USQ-190 Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS JTRS). The following non-Major Defense Equipment (MDE) items will also be included: communications equipment; support equipment; engineering and technical support and assistance; non-warranty repair and return; training; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost is $31.5 million.

This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

The proposed sale will improve Sweden’s capability to meet current and future threats by modernizing its existing Link 16 capability to interoperate with U.S. forces and to exchange secure, jam-resistant tactical data via Link 16. Sweden will use the enhanced capability as a deterrent to regional threats and strengthen its homeland defense. Sweden will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The principal contractor is Data Link Solutions, located in Cedar Rapids, IA. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Sweden; however, U.S. Government Engineering and Technical Services may be required on an interim basis for training and technical assistance.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

The description and dollar value are for the highest estimated quantity and dollar value based on initial requirements. Actual dollar value will be lower depending on final requirements, budget authority, and signed sales agreement(s), if and when concluded.
