Hugh L. Mills Jr.
Hugh L. Mills, Jr. was one of the most decorated pilots of the Vietnam War. During his two tours in Vietnam as an aerial scout and one as a Cobra pilot, he flew more than 3,300 combat hours and developed many of the aerial scouting tactics of the U.S. Army Air Cavalry.
He was shot down 16 times and wounded three times, receiving numerous decorations for valor, including three Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, and three Bronze Stars, one of them for valor in ground combat. The Vietnamese government awarded him the Valor Cross with Silver Star and Palm, the Vietnamese Medal of Honor, First Class, and the Civic Action Medal of Honor, First Class.
Mills, who commanded the aerial scout platoon of the 4th Cavalry, was described by Major General A.E. Milloy, commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division, as "the bravest small-unit leader in the 1st Division, with the highest combat casualty rate in the Big Red One."
His accomplishments include developing a pilot technique to correct the OH-6 Cayuse's "Hughes Tail Spin," which had killed numerous airmen; leading air cavalry raids in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam; commanding the Army's first night attack helicopter unit with rudimentary night vision systems; and being the first Army pilot to test the XM-8 40mm grenade launcher in combat.
Mills co-authored a book about his experiences in Vietnam, "Low Level Hell: A Scout Pilot in the Big Red One." He retired in 1993 after 26 years of service.

Mills's decorations include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the Air Medal with V-Device, the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with Silver Star and Palm, the Vietnamese Armed Forces Medal of Honor, First Class, and the Vietnamese Civil Action Medal, First Class.
Honors:
In 2011, Mills was inducted into the Army Aviation Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was inducted into the Arkansas Walk of Fame. The OH-6 at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum is painted in the colors of Mills's Miss Clawd IV (his OH-6A when he was with Troop C, 16th Cavalry).

There are plenty of military museums in and around Hanoi, with the main one having recently removed from outside the Hanoi Flag Tower in the old quarter to a new location to the west of the city.The new location has a large collection of Vietnamese and American hardware and aircraft outside, along with rooms inside that are full of displays and relics from Vietnam's military history.
