As production of the latest Gripen E ramps up, Swedish airframer Saab is eyeing new opportunities in South America, Asia and Europe...

Saab officials, speaking on 21 February, revealed the airframer is in talks with governments in Peru, Colombia, Thailand, the Philippines and Austria to offer the Gripen E as a replacement for existing fighter fleets.

Saab currently has 35 jets in production, with plans to deliver the seventh operational fighter to Brazil and the sixth example to Sweden in the near future.
Final assembly of the first of eight two-seat Gripen Fs for Brazil has also begun.

The modernization of fourteen JAS-39 Gripen supersonic machines in Czech service will cost 1.028 billion crowns, said Industry Minister Jozef Síkela after the government meeting...

"Unfortunately, my predecessors did not include these modernizations in the contract when negotiating the lease, so we have to proceed in this way," remarked Černochová. Specifically, these are the so-called Block 2.1 upgrade and Block 2.2 upgrade packages.

The modernization will concern the identification system, secure communication, the ability to refuel in flight during the day and at night, or the possibility of using weapon systems.

The order will be implemented in the form of an intergovernmental agreement with the Kingdom of Sweden.

The Czech Republic has been leasing airplanes from the Swedish manufacturer Saab since 2005. Currently, it costs approximately 1.7 billion crowns per year. This is purely the amount for rental and operation without fuel and personnel costs.
