A kétüléses nagy kedvencem, nem mellesleg - gondolom - a Phantom-hoz vezető út egyik mérföldköve volt.
Az ötvenes évek brutális fejlődést hozott a repülésben. Nagyon kedvelem az akkori amerikai gépeket. Hihetetlen, fantáziadús időszak volt, igazi mérnöki kánaán, minden "hülye" ötletre volt pénz.

Question: Who first introduced Infrared Search and Track (IRST) on fighter jets?

Apparently, yesterday's post on American fighters equipped with Infrared Search and Track (IRST) caused a furore.
Many people don't know, and don't believe, that it wasn't the Soviets who first introduced IRST, but instead it was the Americans that did so. The 1950's vintage McDonnell F-101B Voodoo interceptor was the first ever military aircraft of any sort to have IRST installed as a backup to it's radar which is expected to be heavily jammed in an actual conflict.

The IRST was never a popular sensor with the Americans, and only made sporadic appearances on various USAF and USN fighters over the decades. The last American fighter to be equipped with a build in IRST was the Grumman F-14 Tomcat before the Americans abandoned the concept.
Ironically enough, just as the Americans abandoned it in the late 1970's, the Soviets were just introducing the same sensor on their then new fighters the, Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker and the Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-29 Fulcrum, at around the same time. The IRST got caught up in the hype surrounding the undeniably impressive flight performance of both high performance fighters and somehow came to be regarded as some kind of new Soviet secret weapon.

The Western world in general, and the Americans in particular, had apparently forgotten that they themselves were the ones who had introduced the concept of IRST, and not to mention the fact that at the time in the 1970's, the F-14 Tomcat was still new and was itself the last American fighter to have an integral IRST! IRST on American fighters would make a comeback during the 2010's in the form of podded systems as a counter to the ever proliferating stealth fighters.
