Elbit America Completes First Sigma NG 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer Prototype in the U.S...

Elbit America, the U.S. subsidiary of Israeli defense giant Elbit Systems, has in recent days completed the assembly of the first prototype of its Sigma Next Generation (NG) self-propelled howitzer system in 155mm/52 caliber at its plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Sigma NG is an advanced wheeled self-propelled howitzer mounted on a 10×10 chassis by the American company Oshkosh, and equipped with a remotely operated turret featuring a fully automatic loading system. The system enables a crew of just three soldiers—the driver, commander, and operator—to operate the gun from within a protected armored cabin, without exposure to enemy fire. Its rate of fire reaches up to eight rounds per minute, with a “shoot-and-scoot” capability of under one minute, making it highly survivable on a modern battlefield saturated with drones and counter-battery fire.

The system is based on a version that entered service with the Israel Defense Forces in 2025 and has proven itself in operational testing. Elbit America is now competing in the U.S. Army’s Self-Propelled Howitzer Modernization program, which is expected to announce its first phase in February 2026. Key competitors include the French CAESAR Mk II, South Korea’s tracked K9, Sweden’s Archer, and German systems.
