The Ukrainian air force has been taking full advantage of the AN/ALQ-131-equipped F-16s’ ability to fill Russian radar screens with electronic noise. “They act as ‘flying air defense’ with advanced missile warning tech,” the pro-Ukraine Conflict Intelligence Team analysis group noted.

But the Russian air force could sidestep the jamming by reprogramming their radars to operate at slightly different frequencies. Under Biden, the USAF team might’ve kept pace with Russian adaptation by constantly adjusting the AN/ALQ-131s own frequencies. Under Trump, Ukrainian airmen are stuck with pods whose programming may soon be out of date.

As Aks points out, the Ukrainian Air Force is taking full advantage of the ability of F-16s equipped with AN/ALQ-131 pods to flood Russian radar screens with electronic noise. They act as “flying air defenses” with advanced missile warning technology, notes the Conflict Intelligence Team.

But the Russian Air Force can circumvent the jamming by reprogramming its radars to different frequencies. As Axe points out, while the Biden Air Force was able to keep up with the Russian adaptation by constantly tweaking the AN/ALQ-131 frequencies, under Trump, Ukrainian pilots are not receiving updates, and the programs could soon become obsolete.

However, France’s Mirage 2000s are equipped with their own powerful jammers, and the Americans are not involved in their programming, the analyst notes.

USAF Testing Angry Kitten EW Pod on C-130 as F-16 Integration Progresses...

The F-16 has completed the test phase for the integration of the AN/ALQ-167 Angry Kitten electronic warfare pod, as the USAF considers the platform for other aircraft types like the C-130, KC-135, and KC-46.

EDPOD ESM Pod Enters the Turkish Air Force’s Inventory...

Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced that TÜBİTAK BİLGEM’s EDPOD has entered the inventory of the Turkish Air Force.

EDPOD, developed by TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, has entered the Turkish Air Force inventory to be used onboard F-16 fighter jets to provide extensive ESM capabilities.

The pod is mounted on the central fuselage hardpoint, which is normally used for external fuel tanks.

EDPOD, upon detecting radar signals from the enemy systems, identifies and locates the signal source. The aforementioned information is shared with friendly platforms in real-time. Additionally, the pod can store the data from operations ready for analysis.
Importance of ESM Systems*

ESM systems are beneficial not only for combat duties like SEAD/DEAD but also for gathering intelligence during peacetime on adversary capabilities.

Alongside EDPOD, Turkiye is also investing in smaller ESM pods for UCAVs like TÜBİTAK BİLGEM’s EDPOD-K and ASELSAN’s ANTIDOT-2U/S to improve situational awareness against air defence systems. UCAVs’ considerably longer endurance is an advantage for signal intelligence (SIGINT) missions.
