On 29th July 1914, at 2:20 am, three Austro-Hungarian river monitors of the Danube Flotilla (SMS Temes, SMS Bodrog, SMS Számos) open fire at the Serbian capital, Belgrade. These shells are generally considered to be the first shots of the First World War.
