Aurora wins DARPA contract to develop ‘active flight control’ X-plane​

Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences has won a US defence contract to develop an experimental aircraft that can fly without traditional control surfaces like rudders, flaps and ailerons.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) said on 7 December Aurora won a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) worth $42 million for development of the so-called X-Plane.

Officially known as the Control of Revolutionary Aircraft with Novel Effectors (CRANE), the programme aims to improve flight performance through the use of so-called active flight control (AFC). The design eliminates use of traditional moving control surfaces to manoeuvre an aircraft, instead using actuators and effectors to modify surface airflow by directly adding energy or momentum.

A kínaiaknak is voltak jó próbálkozásaik:

...balról/felül egy gyártott MiG-21 utód(J-7E), egy új, nem "csak-a-sebesség-bármi-áron" célra optimalizált(?) delta szárnnyal, hanem egy "minden más sebesség-tartományban" barátságosabb, jobban kezelhető --a SAAB J35 Draken-hez hasonló-- kettős delta-szárnnyal , alig észrevehető sebesség "feláldozásával".

Jobbról/alul pedig egy hasonló korú "kacsás", de csak prototipus/továbbfejlesztés(J-9), amit a jelentős lemaradás(és még sok lehetséges/nem-ismert ok miatt) nem is gyártottak, csak egy közbenső fejlesztési/technológia lépés volt.
