The deal is worth W49.7 billion ($42 million) and covers the fourth and fifth examples of the Surion variant that the service is taking, says KAI.

The rotorcraft will be delivered by July 2024.

According to KAI, the KUH-1CG is optimised for maritime security missions as well as search and rescue.

It is equipped with Leonardo’s Osprey 30 active electronically scanned array radar, which KAI says allows the KUH-1CG to detect up to 1,000 targets at the same time.

It also has an electro-optical/infrared camera, a hoist, and a searchlight.

It notes that the first KUH-1G has performed well operating from South Korea’s Jeju Island, including the rescue of five sailors in February.

Cirium fleets data suggests that the Republic of South Korea Coast Guard operates 25 helicopters and fixed wing aircraft.

KAI estimates that 40% of the coast guard fleet is obsolete, and therefore ripe for replacement.

Older types include eight Kamov KA-32s that are an average of 24.3 years old, and a Bell 412 that is 31.9 years old.

There are 133 Surion-based helicopters in service in South Korea. The Korean army is the largest operator with 100 examples, followed by the South Korean marines with 17.

Parapublic operators comprise the Korea National Police Agency (eight), coast guard (two), South Korean Forestry Aviation (one) and Jeju Fire Safety Division (one). In addition, KAI itself is listed as operating four examples.

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has been awarded a contract to develop an attack helicopter for the Republic of Korea (RoK) Marine Corps.

Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) has proposed to develop an attack helicopter based on the MUH-1 Marineon. The aircraftʼs side-by-side cockpit seat design differs from traditional attack helicopter tandem-seating layouts.

In an announcement on 27 October, KAI said that it had signed a contract with South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to develop the helicopter at a cost of KRW438.40 billion (USD308.65 million). The contract is to be executed within 46 months, KAI said in a regulatory filing.

The company told Janes that three prototypes will be produced. KAI added in a statement that it had proposed the development of the MUH-1 Marineon amphibious helicopter into an attack helicopter as it is a “proven light armed helicopter (LAH)”.

The company said that the helicopter must be capable of covering amphibious manoeuvres of the marine corps, its “amphibious assault helicopters and air assault forces”. It must “provide air fire support for ground combat units between the final operations,” KAI added.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced on the 24th that it has completed the Army's field deployment of Surion...

The Surion, the first helicopter developed with domestic technology, has been deployed to all Army units. As a Korean-style mobile helicopter, it is expected to replace aging army helicopters and strengthen its operational capabilities. The UH-1H and 500MD helicopters that have protected the Army's skies are now disappearing into history. Instead, the Korean mobile helicopter Surion will fill the void.

As a result, starting with the delivery of the first unit to the Army in 2012, a total of 200 Surions have been deployed until recently.

[Kim Tae-woo / Head of Korean Mobile Helicopter Business Team, Helicopter Division, DAPA] : We plan to continuously improve the performance of Surion helicopters in line with cutting-edge technological development trends, and in addition, we will do our best to ensure that Surion can flap its wings overseas.

Surion is actively used in aerial assaults and cargo airlift operations, and has rapidly emerged as a core force in the Army Army Tiger combat system.
In particular, its strengths are that it is equipped with advanced mission equipment to greatly increase the survivability of friendly forces, and that it improves the pilot's control ability by applying all-weather precision navigation.

According to the DAPA, local production of the Surion power transmission system is currently underway and performance improvements are planned to ensure the survival of the crew, so Surion's evolution is expected to continue in the future.

New Surion amphibious assault variant takes flight...

The developmental attack variant of the Korea Aerospace Industries KUH-1 Surion has conducted its maiden sortie.

The helicopter is designated Marine Corps amphibious assault helicopter (MAH) and is closely related to the MUH-1 Marineon in service with he country’s marines.
According to Seoul’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the MAH had its maiden sortie in December 2024, and three prototypes have been completed. The first flight followed ground testing in October 2024.
Development of the MAH is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.

The MAH incorporates several new features, including a chin-mounted rotary cannon and winglets with three hardpoints high on each side of the fuselage. The rotorcraft’s side doors are half the width as those on the MUH-1 – which are necessarily large for troops to enter and exit.

While a window is retained on each side door, the MAH lacks the MUH-1’s rear window. The stub wings replace the two slit windows located aft of the MUH-1’s cockpit.

Unlike conceptual renderings previously issued by KAI, the MAH’s stub wings are mounted high on the fuselage, likely to ease the loading of weapons. Early concepts had indicated that the stub wings would be mounted halfway down the fuselage.

The MAH’s hardpoints were empty during a test flight video posted by DAPA. Previous conceptual imagery of the rotorcraft indicates that armament will include rocket pods, ground attack missiles, and small air-to-air missiles.
