The Air Force detachment from Turkey has completed its mission in Romania

On Wednesday, March 27, at the 86th Air Base "Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociorniţă" Borcea, the ceremony of ending the mission of the Turkish Air Force detachment that carried out Reinforced Air Police missions under NATO command in Romania took place.

The activity was carried out in the presence of the Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff, Lieutenant General Dragoş Dumitru Iacob, the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey in Bucharest, Mr. Özgür Kıvanç Altan, the Deputy Commander for Operations of the Turkish Air Force, Major General Kemal Turan, the adviser the Minister of National Defense, Major General Gabriel-Nicuşor Anghel and the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Major General Leonard-Gabriel Baraboi.

During the ceremony, as a sign of appreciation for the activity carried out during the execution of the mission, the Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff and the Deputy Chief of the Air Force Staff handed out Emblems of Honor to some members of the Turkish detachment.
 
Six Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) landed on Monday, March 25, in the 57th Air Base from Mihail Kogălniceanu in Constanța county.

The British detachment, made up of approximately 200 military personnel (pilots and technical personnel) and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, will perform, together with the Romanian Air Force, Enhanced Air Policing missions under NATO command, in the next four months.

This is the fifth rotation at Mihail Kogălniceanu of the Royal British Air Force, after those carried out in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022.

The enhanced air police missions, carried out jointly with NATO partners, since 2014, are planned in advance and contribute to the development of the reaction and deterrence capacity, as well as to the strengthening of interoperability between the Romanian and allied Air Forces.

Finnish F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets will contribute to the NATO mission from June 3 to July 31, 2024 for the first time. The Finnish detachment, consisting of a maximum of eight F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets and 100 airmen mainly of Karelia Air Wing’s active-duty personnel, will deploy to Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in southeastern Romania near the city of Constanța. The jets will operate together with Royal Air Force Typhoons which arrived in April 2024 and have flown enhanced Air Policing sorties alongside the Romanian Air Force F-16 jets.

Seven F/A-18 Hornet aircraft of the Finnish Air Force landed on Monday, June 3, at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base 57.

The Finnish detachment, consisting of approximately 80 military personnel (pilots and technical-engineering personnel) and the F-18 Hornet aircraft, will perform, together with Romanian Air Force and British Royal Air Force personnel, Reinforced Air Police missions ( enhanced Air Policing) under NATO command, for approximately two months.

For more than sixteen years, since May 2008, NATO and 11 Allies have conducted this specific and unique Air Policing over Iceland. Allies, in conjunction with the Icelandic authorities, have agreed that the appropriate response to ensure protection of Iceland’s airspace is to maintain a periodic presence of NATO fighter aircraft based at NATO Keflavik Air Base.

The Finnish Air Force will deploy with four F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets and 50 supporting personnel primarily from Lapland Air Wing, with support from other units of the Finnish Air Force. They will defend NATO airspace in the Arctic Region and provide Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to meet Iceland's Peacetime Preparedness Needs – or ASIC IPPN.

Czech supersonic JAS-39C Gripen aircraft will once again head to Iceland in May, where they will provide airspace protection for approximately two months. Under the auspices of NATO, our fighters will be responsible for surveillance and, if necessary, response to airspace violations.

The Czech Armed Forces Task Force ASICIPPN 2025 (Airborne Surveillance and Interception Capabilities to meet Iceland's Peacetime Preparedness Needs) will operate from the Keflavík air base. The core of the unit will be formed by members of the 21st Tactical Air Force Base Čáslav, supplemented by soldiers from other units and facilities.
