- May 18, 1994 - A MiG-21 plane crashed during a training flight, the pilot died. The plane, belonging to the military aviation unit in Timişoara, was destroyed.
- October 14, 1994 - A MiG-21 plane crashes and the pilot, Adrian Truşcă, lost his life. The investigation concluded the pilot's errors caused the accident.
- July 27, 1995 - A two-seater MiG-21 plane, from UM 019051-Deveselu, crashed about 15 minutes after takeoff. The was performing a weather research flight, combined with a combat exercise that simulates shooting at ground targets. Both pilots lost their lives.
- August 29, 1995 - A two-seater MiG-21 plane crashed at Giarmata airfield near Timisoara. The two pilots managed to escape by catapulting.
- May 22, 1997 - A MiG-21 military aircraft, from the military unit in Bacău, crashed in the area of Pârjol locality, Bacău county. The pilot was saved by the catapult.
- December 10, 1997 - A two-seater MiG-21 crashed during a training flight, destroyed by impact, but the pilots managed to catapult and survived.
- August 17, 1999 - A two-seater aircraft from Air Force Base 95 crashed near the aviation unit in Bacău. The cause was a piloting error, the plane crashed right after takeoff, about three kilometers from the runway. Both pilots catapulted.
- July 13, 2001 - A SC Aerostar Bacău plane crashed in a mountainous area near Tazlăul Mare, the pilot managed to catapult. The commission ruled out the possibility of a pilot error after decoding the black box.
- February 21, 2002 - A MiG-21 plane belonging to the 86th Feteşti Air Base, crashed in the Iezer fishing lake, near the municipality of Călăraşi. The plane was destroyed and the pilot, Adrian Săvulescu, died. The flight was surveillance training, the accident was caused by a bird.
- March 26, 2002 - An Air Force 71 plane crashes near Turda, but the pilot escaped. The cause was the failure of the engine's fuel system.
- October 23, 2002 - A MiG-21 Lancer aircraft crashed from a height of 30 meters, at the end of the runway at the aerodrome of the Aviation Unit in Bacău. The pilot of the plane managed to catapult before the impact. The accident was caused by a bird.
- September 26, 2003 - A MiG-21 Lancer plane crashed near Câmpia Turzii. The pilot, Cpt Commander Sorin Popa, failed to catapult and died. The crash occurred on a hill near Viişoara. The aircraft was performing a training flight, the cause was determined to be spatial disorientation.
- August 26, 2004 -
Two MiG-21 Lancer aircraft collided in flight, 20 minutes after taking off from Câmpia Turzii airport. The pilots managing to catapult and survived. The cause of the accident was a human error and unfavorable weather conditions.
- March 8, 2005 - A MiG-21 plane belonging to the 86 Feteşti Air Base crashed in the area of Însurăţei locality, from Brăila county. The pilot catapulted, surviving the crash, but the aircraft was almost completely destroyed. The probable cause of the accident was the loss of aerodynamic stability of the aircraft by the energetic actuation of the controls by the pilot.
- November 22, 2006 - A MiG-21 plane crashed in Beliu, in Arad County. The aircraft operated normally throughout the flight, from take-off to impact. The commission of inquiry found that the plane crash could be attributed to "the sudden onset of the pilot's loss of consciousness, induced by one of the environmental factors or a pre-existing latent psycho-physical condition." The pilot died.
- November 1, 2010 - A plane
crashed near Câmpia Turzii. Two pilots lost their lives.
- June 12, 2017 -
A MiG 21 Lancer crashed near the town of Nazarcea in Constanța, the pilot, Adrian Stancu, catapulted. He said his plane had major engine problems during the landing maneuvers.
- July 7, 2018 - A MiG 21 Lancer, participating in the Open Day at Borcea Air Base,
crashed during the demonstration, near the toll station in Feteşti. The pilot, 36-year-old lieutenant-commander Florin Rotaru, instead of catapulting, died, as he kept the plane in the air as long as possible to get as far as he can get from the people attending the event.
- April 20, 2021 - A MiG-21 LanceR military plane flying a training flight
crashed in Mureș County, the pilot managed to catapult.
- March 2, 2022 - One of a pair of MiG-21s on a patrolling mission disappeared from the radar and
crashed near Cogealac in South-Eastern Constanta, killing its pilot. The IAR SA330 helicopter sent to find him also crashed during the search-and-rescue operation, killing all seven onboard. All MiG-21 and SA330 were temporarily grounded.
- April, 2022 - Due to issues with its landing gear hatches, a MiG-21 aircraft was forced to perform an emergency landing in Constanța County.
- April 15, 2022 - Following several
accidents during military exercises in March and April 2022, Romania indefinitely suspended all MIG-21 LanceR flights, supposedly
"to improve aviation safety and prevent aviation events and accidents. by reducing the risks associated with technical failures", but the Romanian MoD made it clear they are rushing the procurement of 32 Norwegian, 40+ years old F-16 and not planning to rely on the MiG-21s any further.
Romanian airspace is effectively patrolled and protected by NATO air forces since the outbreak of the Ukrainian-Russian war; as NATO strengthened its presence on Romanian territory,
the Romanian Army seems to be more unprepared than ever to participate even in military exercises, forget getting involved in a military conflict.
