A svédek próbalnak kiutat keresni ebbol a helyzetbol:

Óriási megrendelés készül a Saab számára

Sweden’s Bold Move: Rolls-Royce Engine Could Save the Gripen E/F!

Could Sweden’s Saab Gripen E/F fighter jet break free from US export restrictions—thanks to a British engine? In a high-stakes gamble, Sweden is exploring the integration of the Rolls-Royce EJ230, a derivative of the Eurofighter Typhoon’s EJ200, to replace the American-made General Electric F414G.

Why This Matters:
The US has blocked Gripen sales to countries like Colombia due to export controls on GE engines.
A European engine could open doors in Canada, Peru, and even Ukraine, where geopolitical tensions make US-dependent fighters risky.
The Gripen E/F currently relies on 30% US components, making it vulnerable to political vetoes.

Key Questions:
✔️ Can the EJ230 match (or beat) GE’s F414G in thrust and reliability?
✔️ Will Canada choose the Gripen over the F-35 if it offers local production and no US strings?
✔️ Could this move strain Sweden’s relationship with the US and NATO?
✔️ Is this Sweden’s biggest defense gamble since joining NATO?

Inside the Strategy:
Peru’s $2 billion deal for 12 Gripens could be secured with a non-US engine.
Colombia’s $3.65 billion order hangs in the balance—will the EJ230 be the solution?
Ukraine has quietly discussed Gripens—could a Rolls-Royce engine make it happen?

⚠️ Challenges Ahead:
Redesigning the Gripen’s airframe for a new engine won’t be cheap or easy.
US backlash could threaten Sweden’s access to other critical defense tech.
Will Brazil and other operators stick with GE or switch to the EJ230?

As of April 2025, no official confirmation exists—but leaks suggest Saab and Rolls-Royce have been working behind the scenes. Is this Sweden’s masterstroke, or a billion-dollar gamble?

RR hajtóművel nem cseberből vederbe kerülnek? Airstrip One nem annyira független a nagytestvértől szerintem. Argentinába melyik hajtóművel exportálnák?

Argentína használt dán F-16-osokat szerzett be.

Two decades of Gripen fighters in the Czech Air Force...

Czech pilots flying over 38,000 hours since 2005

From 2016, the Gripens received the MS20 software update, enabling use of the PS-05/A Mk3 radar and the Link 16 data link, improving interoperability with NATO forces.

Following previous implementations of MS20 software editions in 2018 and 2020, last year the MS 20 Block 2.1B was upgraded, which enabled the Link 16 data transfer function of Block upgrade 2, the operation of the Military Mode 5 IFF identification system and the reception of the encrypted signal of the Military GPS navigation system. An upgrade to MS 20 Block 2.2 is planned, which is also to include the SATURN encrypted communication system.

Last week, the Czech Air Force's tactical air force reached another significant milestone when the Čáslav-based 211th Tactical Squadron was the first operational unit among all JAS-39 platform users to begin training in night refueling procedures.

This capability, for which the Swedish fighters had to undergo minor modifications, had so far only been verified on Gripens by test pilots from the manufacturer and the Swedish FMV authority. The Czech Air Force was thus the first to begin implementing this new capability into routine training, in cooperation with the Multinational Tanker Fleet of the IMF, which also includes the Czech Republic.
...

The minimum requirement for maintaining aerial refueling capabilities is set in the relevant NATO documents at 3 contacts every 6 months, but real experience has shown that due to the less than ideal location of the refueling probe on Gripens and the complexity of the entire procedure for this type, it is good to conduct training much more often. The experience of the Swedish Air Force shows that it is good to carry out at least one training flight with multiple contacts every 3–4 months.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will take delivery of its first F-39E Gripen fighter jet assembled in Brazil in November, said the service’s Commander, Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, on May 5.
