A Szu-22 nem fér bele a klasszikus bombázó-kategóriába, ehhez túl kicsi a harci terhelése és a hatótávolsága, ezeket már a 70-es években is tíz-tonnákban és 1000km-ekben mérték. A Szu-22 vadászbombázó, tehát nagyjából vadászgép-méretű és mozgékonyságú, elsősorban földi célpontok elleni csapásmérésre tervezett harcigép, nyugati kategorizálás szerint harcászati vadászgép (tactical fighter). Akár a pontosabb csapásmérés miatt kisebb (4000 m alatt) magasságból bombázott, vagy még alacsonyabbról UB-blokkal vagy gépágyúval támadott, ott biza simán eléri a MANPADS, vagy akár egy gépágyú/géppuska szerencsés sorozata is.

Szerintem inkább támadó gép az. merthát R-60-nál komolyabb légiharc rakétát nem tud alkalmazni, az meg kvázi önvédelemre van rajta.
