2000.12.01. - The Gripen Solution for Hungary

SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen has today submitted a proposal in response to Hungarian government's request for information (RFI) for the modernization of the Hungarian Air Force. The proposal is based on the supply of up to 24 NATO-interoperable Gripen fourth-generation multi-role/swing-role fighters. Supported by a flexible finance package and an innovative industrial cooperation program that would provide significant long-term economic benefits, the aircraft would be delivered from 2005.
The specific benefits to Hungary of a Gripen solution are: From 2005, the delivery of up to 24 fourth-generation NATO-interoperable Gripen fighters, (including four two-seater variants) which will form the core of Hungary's modernized air force to fulfill its national defense and NATO requirements. Linked to the procurement of Gripen, an opportunity to further stimulate Hungarian industry in both the commercial and defence sectors through the development of strategic partnerships with key European companies. A long-term and flexible finance proposal, backed by the governments of Sweden and the United Kingdom, that could delay the normal initial capital outlay involved with a major acquisition program. A complete logistics and pilot-training support package which could include the opportunity for a number of Hungarian pilots to train with the Swedish Air Force on Gripen, enabling the early establishment of fully qualified multi-role/swing-role operational instructors and pilots.

"A new-build Gripen solution is the best possible option for the Hungarian Air Force, for Hungarian industry and for the Hungarian national economy," states Jan Narlinge, managing director, SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen. "It provides the best long-term solution for Hungary, not just in terms of meeting national and international defense obligations, but also in terms of affordability and delivering economic benefits." Backed by the Swedish and United Kingdom governments and supported by the combined experience and resource of companies including Volvo, Ericsson and Investor (one of the world's biggest industrial conglomerates) Gripen would provide Hungary with a significant, wide-ranging program of industrial benefits that go far beyond those associated with traditional offset. "Hungarian industry would benefit from participation in a comprehensive program of long-term partnerships across a wide range of industrial sectors," promised Torbjorn Edberg, SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS' Gripen director for Hungary. "These partnerships and associated investments would not only provide Hungary with economic benefits before the first financial payment was due but would also continue well beyond the delivery period of the aircraft."

2000.12.01. - Gripen Partnership Projects in Hungary to exceed US $575m by Year End

SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen has today confirmed it will have registered more than US $575 million in pre-contract offsets with the Hungarian Ministry of Economy by the end of the current year. This significant achievement has been made possible through the support of a Gripen offset trade group, comprising a number of individual companies, organizations and institutes. Significant activities, which have already been approved by the Hungarian Ministry of Economy, include: Electrolux, which has opened a vacuum cleaner factory, a chest freezer factory plus a research and development center, a new refrigerator factory and a new logistics center in Jaszbereny. Ericsson, which has opened a new regional head office and a software development center and has intensified its co-operation with the Technical University of Budapest. AstraZeneca, which has establishes a new regional office with advanced education facilities in Budaors and has expanded its clinical research activities in Hungary. Volvo, which has opened a new regional head office and maintenance center in Budapest. Scania, which has established a new head office and maintenance center in Biatorbagy.

"We are already demonstrating our commitment to producing economic benefits for Hungary. I am confident we can build on this success to produce a substantial industrial partnership program that will generate real long-term benefits for the Hungarian treasury and fully meet government expectations," stated Torbjorn Edberg, SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS director, Hungary. "Procurement of the Gripen fourth-generation multi-role fighter will enable further economic growth for Hungary and substantial employment opportunities through industrial partnerships, export promotion and high- technology transfer among others. The benefits of our Gripen solution go far beyond those available from any of our competitors." The industrial sectors and projects upon which the company will focus will be dependent upon guidance from the Hungarian government, but could encompass research and development, regional development, the environment, small and medium-sized enterprises, sub-contractor and information technology, among others.

2001.02.09. - New Gripen offer for Hungary

Swedish Ambassador to Hungary, Staffan Carlsson, has today offered the Hungarian Air Force the loan of up to 24 NATO-interoperable Gripen fourth- generation, swing-role fighters to meet its short-term NATO and national defence needs. The offer, submitted on behalf of SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen AB, supported by the governments of Sweden and the United Kingdom, complements an RFI response for the longer-term purchase of new fighter aircraft submitted last December.

Speaking in Budapest today, Torbjörn Edberg, regional director SAAB-BAE SYSTEMS Gripen said: "We believe the cost of the new Gripen proposal is lower than that proposed for its older-generation competitors. If necessary, Hungary could extend the initial loan period or replace loan aircraft with the new Gripen fighters as part of a future purchase." Gripen is one of the most modern multi-role/swing-role fighters available internationally today. Unlike its older in-service competitors, it can provide the Hungarian Air Force with a level of operational capability that will fully meet its NATO and national defence requirements for the next 30 years or more. The proposal provides the Hungarian Air Force with five full years of operations, following deliveries, which would begin less than two years after contract signature. A comprehensive offset programme, involving both the aerospace/defence and commercial sectors and high-technology transfer programmes will provide 100 per cent economic compensation for expenditure incurred by the Hungarian government. The new Gripen proposal for Hungary is backed by a low-cost integrated support package which includes in-country pilot and technical representation, spares, technical publications, ground support equipment and training devices.

"If Hungary selects a Gripen solution, it will act as a catalyst for huge economic and industrial benefits, providing real opportunities for employment creation, export promotion and the transfer of high technology," he Torbjörn Edberg. "This will assist with the future development of national industrial capabilities", he concludes.

2001.11.23. - Hungary chooses Gripen

Hungary has chosen Gripen, and is the first NATO country to do so. The MOU signed today entails Hungary leasing 14 Swedish Gripen aircraft over a 10-year period. Sweden's Minister for Defence Björn von Sydow today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with his Hungarian counterpart Dr János Szabó, which means that over 10 years, Hungary will lease 14 Gripen aircraft currently operational within the Swedish Air Force. At the same time, Gripen International, owned jointly by Saab and BAE SYSTEMS, has negotiated an offset agreement connected to the Gripen contract. The offset agreement will be signed as early as December this year, and will afford Hungary industrial co-operation and economic development. "This is a breakthrough in Europe and an important step for us on the international market," says Åke Svensson, President of Saab Aerospace in Linköping, Sweden, which will be modifying the aircraft to Hungarian specifications. Sweden is one of only five countries in the world that develop advanced military aviation systems. Gripen is the only fourth generation fighter currently in operational service. Hungary is the third country to choose the Gripen, after Sweden and South Africa. Pilots and engineers will initially be trained in Sweden. Adjustments and modification to, among others, NATO standard will be carried out at Saab Aerospace in Linköping. The first Gripen aircraft will be delivered to Hungary in autumn 2004, and will be fully operational the following summer. Saab is one of the world's leading high-technology companies, with its main operations focusing on defence, aviation and space. The group covers a broad spectrum of competence and capability in systems integration.

2001.12.20. - GRIPEN OFFSET AGREEMENT SIGNED WITH HUNGARY

György Matolcsy, Hungarian Minister of Economy and Ian McNamee, managing director Gripen International, have today signed an offset agreement linked to the Hungarian government's lease of 14 Gripen multi-role fighters to meet its national, NATO and European defense needs. The value of this agreement, signed in Budapest, will exceed Hungarian commitments connected to the aircraft lease agreement. Offset activities will be carried out within nine years from the effective contract date. We have already delivered pre-offset worth US $661 million to Hungary and are in discussions with over 40 companies to build on this existing commitment," states Ian McNamee "The lease of Gripen will act as a catalyst for further economic growth in Hungary and create substantial employment opportunities through industrial partnerships, export promotion and work placement, among others." Offset programs will be targeted to meet the business sector priorities identified by the Hungarian government.

Gripen International has utilized the strengths of an international industrial network, which includes its shareholder companies BAE SYSTEMS and Saab plus others such as Volvo, Ericsson and Investor, one of the world's biggest industrial conglomerates, to develop and deliver long-term economic benefits for Hungary in support of the Gripen contract. Gripen partners Saab and BAE SYSTEMS are world leaders in the delivery of offset to provide industrial co-operation to support defense sales. So far, programs in more than 30 countries have been implemented with a total value in excess of USD 22 billion.

2001.12.28. - Gripen International awarded contract for Hungarian air force fighters

FMV (The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration) has awarded Gripen International, owned jointly by Saab of Sweden and the United Kingdom's BAE SYSTEMS, a contract for the adaptation and support of Swedish Air Force Gripen swing-role fighters designated for use by the Hungarian Air Force. Gripen International will manage the contract as prime contractor and award a number of sub-contracts to ensure the Hungarian requirements are met. The main sub-contract will be to Saab AB (approx 1 billion SEK) to adapt the aircraft to Hungarian needs and support the aircraft over the 10 year service period. The company will be responsible for adapting Swedish Gripen aircraft to the specification required by the government of Hungary for the modernization of its air force to meet national and NATO defense needs.

The contractual agreement was signed in Stockholm today. It follows completion of the 10 year lease contract for 14 Gripen fighters, signed in Budapest, by Mr Ferenc Bese, ASIB in the Hungarian Ministry of Defence and Major General Staffan Näsström, FMV "Swedish Air Force variants of Gripen have already operated successfully with aircraft from NATO forces in PFP exercises. Our work will ensure that Hungarian Air Force Gripen fighters are fully NATO compatible and interoperable and will allow the Hungarian Air Force to maximize its contribution for NATO's collective defense," said Ian McNamee, managing director, Gripen International. Under the government-to-government lease agreement, 14 Gripen fighters will be delivered to Hungary from Sweden in batches, beginning late 2004. The Hungarian Air Force's Gripen squadron will become fully operational during 2005. Initial training of pilots and technicians will be carried out in Sweden, while UK Government support will provide Hungarian aircrew and other personnel with English language training and experience of NATO operations, as required.

2002.12.06. - Total pre-offset registration reached 876 Million USD

The Gripen offset agreement is equivalent to 110% of the leasing agreement value signed in December 2001. The full offset program will be delivered within 9 years from the contract signing in December 2001 and includes 32% direct investment. Total pre-offset registration reached 876 Million USD During the autumn Gripen International has together with the Offset Coordination office (in the Hungarian Ministry of Economy and Transport) closed the Gripen Pre-offset registration by registering the outstanding Investments and Export increase from 2000 and 2001.
First Gripen offset claims worth 39 billion HUF (165 million euro) submitted to Hungarian Ministry of Economy

2003.02.03. - Gripen International signs enhanced offset agreement with Hungary

Gripen International has agreed to increase its offset commitment to correspond to the higher value of the Gripen agreement. For Hungary this means that more jobs can be created and more business opportunities can be explored. Kjell Möller, Deputy Managing Director Gripen International and Gábor Szalay Pol.State Secretary, Hungarian Ministry of Economy and Transport, signed the enhanced offset agreement today in Budapest.

The agreement was signed in conjunction with the Hungarian government and the Swedish government signing the amended agreement for 14 Gripen multi-role combat aircraft to Hungary. "Hungary was the first NATO-member to choose Gripen and will be one of the first countries within NATO to operate a fourth generation fighter. We are pleased with today's agreement to provide Hungary with an affordable solution, which is fully NATO-interoperable and meets the extended technical requirements. We are fully committed to benefiting Hungarian industry through the enhanced offset agreement and thereby continue the excellent cooperation that we have had with Hungary since 1995", says Kjell Möller, Deputy Managing Director of Gripen International. Gripen International has committed to provide offset and industrial cooperation to a value of 110% of the amended agreement value, which includes investments equaling 32% of the agreement's value. The full offset program will be delivered within 14 years from the contract signed in 2001 and half of the obligations will be achieved within 8 years. The 110% commitment represents net value, i.e. credits generated without the application of any multipliers. SAAB AB and BAE SYSTEMS are world leaders in the delivery of economic compensation to support defense sales. To date, programs in more than 30 countries have been implemented with a total value in excess of US$20 billion.

2003.02.07. - Saab receives SEK 2 billion order for Hungarian lease of 14 Gripen fighters

The extended agreement for the Hungarian government's leasing of 14 Gripen fighters from the Swedish government will also call for modification work on the part of Saab Aerospace. The order is worth more than SEK 2 billion to Saab. On February 3rd, FMV (the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration) and the Hungarian government signed an amendment to the contract signed in December 2001 for the adaptation and support of 14 Gripen multi-role fighters designated for use by the Hungarian Air Force. This agreement, which involves development and modification, is worth more than SEK 2 billion to Saab. The Hungarian Gripen will be equipped with a retractable Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR) probe. It will have the capacity to use NATO- interoperable weapons, including Laser-Guided Bombs (LGBs), an advanced electronic warfare system, an On-Board Oxygen Generation System (OBOGS), English-language full-color cockpit displays and a NATO-interoperable communications system. This ensures that the Hungarian Gripen can operate jointly from NATO or dispersed bases, with the alliance's air and ground forces world-wide. The agreement was reached because Sweden is able to offer Hungary an aircraft of world class at a reasonable price and on good financial terms, as well as a long-term industrial cooperation. - This solution show the capacity for further development that is offered by the Gripen system. Furthermore, it confirms Gripen's position within the NATO Air forces. It should be possible to offer similar solutions to other countries, says Åke Svensson, General manager for the business area Saab Aerospace. The Gripen aircraft will be adapted to meet the extended specification required by the government of Hungary for the modernization of its air force to meet national and NATO defence needs. After a leasing period of ten years, Hungary intends to buy the aircrafts. The 14 Gripen fighters will be modified at Saab Aerospace in Linköping, Sweden and will be delivered in 2006.

The industrial sectors and projects upon which the company will focus will be dependent upon guidance from the Hungarian government, but could encompass research and development, regional development, the environment, small and medium-sized enterprises, sub-contractor and information technology, among others.

A románoknak a keleti szomszédja a Fekete tenger.

Ők fontosak a NATO-t mozgató amerikai gyökerű politikai elitnek.
Egyébként végül drágábban vettünk kisebb tudású gépet a svédektől.

Egyes egyedül a kérdésben addigra már teljesen fogalmatlan MSzP felé kínjukban kapaszkodó svédek mutattak érdeklődést a magyar vadászgépbeszerzés iránt, akármilyen darabszámmal, akármilyen konstrukcióban.
