In 2007, Hungary leased 14 multi-purpose JAS-39 Gripen from Sweden, which will remain the region's most modern aircraft until the arrival of Greek and Croatian Rafales. The country pays about $
130 million a year to the Swedish SAAB in the name of leasing until 2026.
This enables it to use modern AMRAAM long-range missiles, Sidewinder short-range missiles, laser-guided bombs and AGM-65 Maverik anti-tank missiles. However, this option also produces a certain cost, so Hungary spent 230 million dollars just for the subsequent purchase of more modern variants of AMRAAM air-to-air missiles.
Serbia's northern neighbors originally demanded as many as 180 such rockets, but the bill for that was $ 500 million, so the procurement plan was reduced.
The plan is to modernize to a level that will ensure the integration of modern guided bombs GBU-39 SDB as well as air-to-air meteor missiles, for which some funds will be allocated again.
